In 1989, Mr. Rohan Manamudali and his team demonstrated their Sinhala word processor and accepted the challenge of developing it even further. By refining keyboard input methods and addressing local-language usability needs, they created one of Sri Lanka’s earliest and most influential trilingual word-processing solutions.
Originally introduced as THIBUS, the solution filled a major gap in Sri Lanka’s computing landscape by enabling people to work naturally in Sinhala, Tamil and English. The easiest phonetic typing
Lakbasa delivers a uniquely simple and natural phonetic typing experience. Type Sinhala according to the way it sounds in English, and Lakbasa intelligently produces the correct Sinhala letters and vowel signs.
For example, typing “a” produces the phonetically similar Sinhala sound “අ”. When it follows a consonant, such as “k + a”, Lakbasa naturally forms “කා”—making Sinhala typing faster and easier to learn.
The traditional Wijesekera keyboard mode is also available for users who prefer the standard Sinhala typewriter layout.
